Next.js vs WordPress for a Business Website

WordPress powers a huge share of the web, but more businesses are choosing Next.js. Here's how to decide which one fits your site.

October 6, 2026

WordPress has been the default choice for business websites for years. Next.js — a framework built on React — is now behind many of the fastest sites on the web. Both are good tools. The right one depends on how your site will be used.

Where Next.js wins

  • Speed. Pages are pre-built and served from a global network, so they load almost instantly. That matters for both conversions and Google rankings.
  • Security. There's no public admin login or plugin stack to attack, which removes the most common way business sites get hacked.
  • No plugin sprawl. Features are built into the site itself instead of stacked from dozens of third-party plugins that each need updating.
  • Room to grow. The same codebase can grow from a marketing site into a customer portal, booking system, or full web app.

The trade-off: changes to layout or new features need a developer. Content editing is still easy with an admin panel or CMS, but you can't install a plugin yourself to add a new feature in five minutes.

Where WordPress wins

  • Publishing every day. If your team writes posts and pages constantly, WordPress's editor is familiar and flexible.
  • Huge ecosystem. There's a plugin or theme for almost everything, which can make simple features quick to add.
  • Lots of people know it. It's easy to find someone to make small changes.

The trade-off: every plugin is another thing to update, and a WordPress site that isn't maintained tends to get slower and less secure over time.

A quick way to decide

Choose Next.js if speed, security, and a custom experience matter most, or if the site may grow into an application.

Choose WordPress if publishing content is the main job of the site and your team wants to manage everything themselves.

Selling products is a third case — for most stores, Shopify is the simplest choice.
